How to Withdraw Cash from an ATM

An ATM is an Automatic Teller Machine used to withdraw cash from your bank account. This article describes how to go about withdrawing cash from an ATM.

Getting Started

An ATM is an Automatic Teller Machine used to withdraw cash from your bank account, at any given time of the day and year. You can withdraw cash at any time of the day irrespective of bank working hours.
ATM’s also allow you to deposit your cheques in its drop boxes placed inside them. These cheques are collected usually at 12.00 AM in the morning to be delivered to the bank’s clearing houses.
You can also use ATM’s to register for cheque book requests, Credit Card cash withdrawal, and for viewing your bank account balance.
To access an ATM, you require an ATM card and its PIN number. Both of these are provided by the bank, when a new account is opened by you. You are expected to carry this card along with the pin number to the ATM. ATM cards are debit cards of the respective banks and hence they only allow cash withdrawal by debit of the user’s bank account. They also double as shopping cards to be used at merchant locations.

A Description of the ATM

An Automatic Teller Machine is housed inside a security cabin and is guarded 24X7 by a security guard. Usually, ATM’s are placed in places convenient for people to access it. These places could be shopping malls, IT parks, city junctions, petrol pumps and bank branches.
Some ATM’s require you to insert the card into the card slot, while others require you to swipe the card in the card slot. The card slot reads the electronic strip on the ATM card to collect data of the user’s bank account.
Cameras placed inside the ATM allow for continuous surveillance of users for 24 hours of the day. Security guards man the ATM cabins and watch user movements and regulate the traffic of people entering and exiting the ATM. They also maintain queues during rush hours, such as lunch hours or after work hours.
ATM’s communicate with their parent bank branches by telecommunication lines dedicated for this purpose. They also have dedicated software’s installed inside them to service user requests.
Communication failures can seriously impair the workings of an ATM. At such points of time, users face a lot of inconvenience and have to look for other ATM locations for servicing their requests.
ATM’s are also targets of thefts after dark. Usually, these instances are relegated to those locations, which are unmanned and in remote locations. But, these thefts are detected faster and brought to book.

The steps for withdrawing cash

To withdraw cash from an ATM, you require:
  1. An ATM Card.
  2. The Pin number of the card.
  3. Balance in your account.
You must:
  1. Locate the ATM machine.
  2. Enter into the ATM security cabin.
  3. Insert your ATM card into the card slot.
  4. Enter your pin number.
  5. You must punch in your withdrawal amount.
  6. And press the “Withdrawal” button.
  7. The ATM produces cash from the cash slot.
  8. You must collect the cash.
  9. You can collect the transaction receipt from the receipt slot.
  10. You must count the cash vended by the machine to ensure its correctness.
ATM’s charge a transaction fee for usage by other bank users, now amended rules say that there are no charges levied, so confirm with bank before cash withdrawal.. These transactions are only handled by select bank ATM’s such as Citibank. These ATM’s can handle international transactions of Visa and MasterCard.
You are not allowed to deposit cash into an ATM’s deposit envelope. Such transactions are rejected. ATM’s usually tender fresh bank notes as they have access to freshly printed notes from the RBI.
Users are charged an ATM card fee on a quarterly basis by banks for using their ATM services. Loss of card has to be reported to put a hold on the card. And, a new card has to be issued to the user. Banks charge a fee for issuing new cards.
ATM cards have a 16 digit ATM card number with an expiry date. This card number and its pin number are used by users to know their account balance on the phone. And, also to inquire details of their account and bank transactions.
ATM’s usually have a transaction withdrawal limit and a daily withdrawal limit. These withdrawal limits force user’s to perform multiple transactions to meet their cash demands.
ATM card thefts are common; hence a user is requested by banks to keep his card and the pin number safely. They are also requested to change their pin number frequently.
ATM cards are usually only for electronic use and hence cannot be used over the internet for shopping.
Each individual user is given only a single ATM card for use of his bank account. Multiple cards are rejected by ATM’s.

Thank you so much for the post. I've always just gone to the bank if I needed some cash, but I figure it's about time that I finally start using modern technology! Can you explain how fees work when it comes to ATM machines? Does it just cost a flat rate fee regardless of how much I spend, or do I get charged a percentage when I withdraw money? http://atmequipment.com
