Dogs & ButterFlies-The Senses

Hearing, Vision & Smell This article discusses the hearing, vision and smell capabilities of dogs and butterflies. It is a comparison, as well as a discussion of these capabilities.

Introduction

Visual Acuity

Dogs can identify humans in a range of a mile. They can see in low light conditions. Their eyes are designed with bigger pupils, which have more number of rods, which increases the flicker rate. It also has great reflectivity, which aids to catch images at fast moving rates. Dogs are dichromats and have color vision like red-green color blindness in humans. Many breeds are known to have myopic vision, and their distant vision imagery is as good as blurred. Though, their individual visual discrimination enables them to identify their owners from distances.

 Hearing

Dogs hear between 40 Hz to 60,000 Hz. They have great low light vision and hence can see clearly in the dark. They have a great ability to pin point locations of sound sources. They can hear sounds, about four times away from what humans hear. Some breeds have a field of vision of 270° (compared to 180° for humans), whereas the ones with short noses have a narrower field of vision, as low as 180°.

Smell
The human brain has a large visual cortex, whereas the dog brain is dominated by an olfactory cortex. The olfactory bulb in dogs is forty times bigger than the olfactory bulb in humans. Dogs have between 125 and 220 million smell-sensitive cells (compared to 5 million in humans). The bloodhound has nearly 300 million smell-sensitive receptors. Dogs can discriminate odors at concentrations nearly 100 million times lower than humans can.
Butterflies, unlike dogs, have antennae which can detect sight and sounds in the air. The vision is well developed and they are sensitive to ultra violet spectra. Butterflies have compound eyes, with which they can see around even when perched on a flower.

Vision

Butterflies like dogs are nearsighted, they see flowers more clearly than entire plants, bushes or shrubs.

Butterflies are color blind, unlike common thinking, which relates them to flower colors-such as red, green, and yellow. Instead, they can see polarized light, which is a reflection of the sun's rays. They are able to see ultraviolet light, which is present on many flowers and which guides them to nectar sources.

Smell

They have a good sense of smell. They do not have noses. The sense receptors are present in the antennae, feet, and many other parts of the body. These help butterflies find food-nectar in flowers. It also helps in mating. The female finds the male's pheromones by the sense receptors.

Sense organs in their feet can taste the sugar in nectar, letting them know if something is good to eat or not. Some females also taste host plants to test for places to lay eggs. Adult butterflies and moths feed themselves using their proboscis- a long, coiled tube. Blood is forced into the tube to straighten it out, allowing them to feed. They get all their food from this tube.

Hearing

They don't have ears. They "hear" sounds through their wings by sensing changes in sound vibrations. They may possess senses not known to us as their anatomy is very different than ours. This is an area which needs more research. And, hence is beyond human perception and knowledge yet. So, don't be surprised if you fail to catch one. And though, they may seem just before your eyes, they can disappear in a flurry of a second. Remember, they have senses smarter than us.

Dog Breeds

Hunting Dogs

Hunting dogs were once bred to help hunters in their pursuit of game in Persia and Egypt. They were known for their scent tracking of preys. They were the earliest dogs used in hunting. European hounds known as sight hounds were used for their amazing ability to chase down prey. Many breeds today are derivations of these natural born hunters.

These dogs never captured the prey they were chasing. They would only point their masters to the prey, so they could take them down.

Hound Dogs

These are known for their exceptional scent capabilities. Afghan Hound, Black Forest Hound, French Hound, Italian Greyhound, Redbone Coonhound are some hound breeds. These animals have great strength, power and are swift in movement. They are used today to track fugitives or criminals by law enforcement.

Search Dogs

Some dogs are used for searching people trapped under houses and debris in case of storms and hurricanes. In case of snow avalanches and earhquakes, the survivors are difficult to get to and these dogs make it possible to reach them.
Calamity survivor dogs include:
German Shepherd Dogs: These dogs are good for search-and-rescue operations.
  • Saint Bernards: This dog is an excellent mountain guide with a keen sense for finding lost people on mountaintops. This breed can detect forthcoming avalanches.
  • Rottweilers: These are also known as guard dogs. They are used for keeping watch at daytime and nights. They are used both at residential homes, large home estates, with guardsman at night duty.
  • Newfoundlands: These are household pets nowadays. But initially they were trained to save people ship wrecked, marooned, or lost in ocean waters around NewFoundLand.

Conclusion

Dogs and butterflies both have short sighted myopic visions. They are both color-blind, dogs are dichromats or with red-green color blindness. Butterflies see in polarized light from the sun's rays and ultra-violet spectra, which reflects off from surfaces of flowers. Hearing in dogs is acute and they can hear sounds four times away from humans. Butterflies do not have ears, and they hear from sound vibrations on their wings.

Dogs have better smell receptors from their olfactory cortex, which is forty times bigger than in humans. They can discriminate odors 100 million times from humans. Butterflies smell and taste things with their sense organs in their feet, antennae and body parts.
